Piotr Beczała gives a career-defining performance in the title role of Wagner’s soaring masterpiece, graduating from the lyrical Italian and French roles for which he is so well known. In a sequel to his revelatory production of PARSIFAL, director François Girard unveils an atmospheric staging that once again weds his striking visual style and keen dramatic insight to Wagner’s breath-taking music, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to conduct a supreme cast led by tenor Piotr Beczała – praised for his “shining musical performance” (The New York Times) and “natural warmth” (Financial Times) – singing the title role of the swan knight.

One of opera’s ultimate diva showcases, Umberto Giordano’s FEDORA has all the hallmarks of a great verismo tragedy: Packed with memorable melodies, showstopping arias, and explosive confrontations, FEDORA features Sonya Yoncheva in the title role of the 19th-century princess who, despite seeking vengeance for the murder of her fiancé, falls in love with the murderer, Count Loris, sung by Piotr Beczała. Marco Armiliato conducts a cast that also features soprano Rosa Feola as Countess Olga and baritone Lucas Meachem as the French diplomat De Siriex. McVicar’s detailed and dramatic staging is based around an ingenious fixed set that, like a Russian nesting doll, unfolds to reveal the opera’s three distinctive settings – a palace in St. Petersburg, a fashionable Parisian salon, and a picturesque villa in the Swiss Alps.
