PRAGUE RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: OPENING CONCERT
One of the most sought-after young violinists of recent years, María Dueñas, and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra at the opening concert of the season.
For the opening concert of the season, the chief conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra Petr Popelka invited one of the most sought-after young violinists of recent years, María Dueñas. A native of Granada, Spain, she won the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition and currently performs in the most prestigious concert halls in the world. In her Czech debut, she played Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s virtuoso Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, one of the most popular works of violin literature, on an instrument from Antonio Stradivari’s workshop.
In the second half of the evening, Petr Popelka performed Gustav Mahler, a native of Kaliště in the Czech Vysočina Region, for the first time as the leader of the Prague Radio Symphonic Orchestra. The programme featured the monumental Symphony No. 1 called Titan, full of dramatic moments, intimate lyricism and references to folk music.
The chief conductor Petr Popelka, one of the most beloved and in demand conductors of his generation, says: “I personally see Czech Radio, celebrating its 100-year anniversary, as a symbol of freedom in the modern history of our country, and its symphony orchestra with its activities as a true cultural treasure.”
