Pique Dame: Jansons & Wiener Philharmoniker
Tchaikovsky’s “Pique Dame” with Mariss Jansons and the Wiener Philharmoniker.
This Salzburg Festival, Lativan conductor Mariss Jansons will dedicate himself to a jewel of Russian repertoire: “Pique Dame” (The Queen of Spades) by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky. After Jansons’ enormous success at last year´s Salzburg Festival, he now teams up again with the Vienna Philharmonic in a new production staged by Hans Neuenfels, well-known for his psychological portrayal of the characters.
The cast includes tenor Brandon Jovanovich and soprano Evgenia Muraveva as the lovers Hermann and Lisa, as well as Vladislav Sulimsky, Igor Golovatenko and Hanna Schwarz. Jansons stands out due to his precise and intensive, long preparations for few highly sophisticated pieces per year.
The opera, performed at the Großes Festspielhaus, will be produced in 4K UHD. Based on the novel by Pushkin (1833), Tchaikovsky tells the story of Hermann trying to solve the mystery of three magical playing cards. The game with the cards, he will soon learn, is the most dangerous of all; the highest bet is your own soul.
