OSI and Markus Poschner are winners at the ICMA!
Rereading Brahms persuades the international jury Great excitement and pride for the OSI musicians and staff
Unexpected and sensational: the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) prize for the category “DVD Performance” has been awarded to the boxed set Rereading Brahms of the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana and its principal conductor Markus Poschner!
An OSI production sponsored by Helsinn, the orchestra’s International Partner, issued on two DVDs by Sony Classical in December 2016: the complete symphonies of Johannes Brahms recorded live by RSI-Radiotelevisione svizzera during the first concert season in the LAC Sala Teatro in Lugano.
Rereading Brahms presents an exciting chamber reinterpretation of Brahms’s symphonic masterpieces that aims to rediscover the composer’s original intentions. A brave artistic undertaking, highly structured and complex, which required years of work to bring to completion: from the scholarly selection of the musical texts – the Urtexte of the new Brahms Complete Edition (the last volume of which was published by Henle Verlag in 2011) – to the purchasing of a number of historical instruments (timpani and trombones in particular). Not to mention a typescript that had remained “secret” until its publication in 2013 – and that Markus Poschner had previously consulted at the Brahms Institute in Lübeck – from which it was possible to reconstruct the Meiningen performance traditiotradition that was very close to Brahms himself, who conducted his symphonies there with an orchestra very similar to the OSI.
For the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana this represents prestigious international recognition of the quality of its work in recent years.
