The inaugural concert of the Pierre Boulez Saal is celebrating the idea of what this venue stands for: to create a space where beloved classics, modern masterworks of the early 20th century, and music of our time can be heard side by side and inspire audiences and performers alike. Anna Prohaska and Jörg Widmann join Barenboim for Schubert’s lyrical scene “Der Hirt auf dem Felsen”, while Barenboim will also partner with the Boulez Ensemble’s strings in Mozart’s Piano Quartet. Karim Said and Michael Barenboim take on Berg’s Chamber Concerto, and Widmann will perform his Fantasy for Solo Clarinet. In tribute to Pierre Boulez, the program is bookended by his fanfare-like Initiale and sur Incises, for three pianos, three harps, and three percussionists.

The Pierre Boulez Saal is an exquisite and architecturally distinct international concert hall and the public face of the Barenboim-Said academy. Designed by star architect Frank Gehry and acclaimed acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, it is a place where many elements — cultural, artistic, humanistic, architectural and historical — and people come together to create an environment of communication, listening and understanding. The hall will enable each listener to feel a direct connection to the performers, while musicians can fully realize their vision in a space customized for their art.
