The Royal Opera of Versailles presents a new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, the revolutionary masterpiece created in collaboration with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. Premiered in Prague in 1787 following the triumph of The Marriage of Figaro, the opera transformed the Don Juan myth into one of the most powerful and psychologically complex works in the operatic repertoire.

Drawing on centuries of literary and theatrical tradition, from the legend of the “Deceiver of Seville” to Molière’s celebrated interpretation, Don Giovanni combines comedy, seduction, violence and the supernatural within a work of extraordinary dramatic intensity. Mozart’s score moves seamlessly between opera buffa and darker, almost tragic dimensions, culminating in the legendary final scene in which Don Giovanni refuses repentance and faces damnation.

Director Marshall Pynkoski embraces the work’s theatrical energy through a staging that balances elegance and dramatic momentum, while the sumptuous costumes of Christian Lacroix bring a distinctive visual richness to the production. At the centre of the cast, Canadian bass-baritone Robert Gleadow takes on the title role, portraying Don Giovanni with charisma, danger and vitality.

Presented in the opulent setting of the Royal Opera of Versailles, this production highlights both the refinement and the dramatic force of Mozart’s opera, reaffirming its enduring status as one of the defining masterpieces of European musical theatre.
