Monteverdi’s Operas with John Eliot Gardiner
John Eliot Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir English Baroque Soloists celebrate the 450th birthday of the 17th century genius and founding father of Opera.
There can be little doubt that the novelty of Monteverdi's work surpassed the art of his forbears and brought about the dawn of a new age. A student and codifier of human passions, Monteverdi spent a lifetime exploring all conceivable techniques in which these could be captured in music. He therefore invites direct comparison with the greatest artists and scientists of the early 17th century - Galileo, Bacon, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Caravaggio and Rubens. 2017 marks the 450th anniversary of Claudio Monteverdi's birth.
From April to October 2017 an international cast of soloists together with members of the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists under the baton of Sir John Eliot Gardiner will perform the surviving trilogy of Monteverdi's great operas in semi-staged performances directed by Elsa Rooke. In these performances the orchestra, composed of Monteverdi's exotic and beautifully crafted period instruments, will take centre-stage and thus form a central part in the story-telling process.
The highlights of the international tour will be performances at Venice’s La Fenice as well as at the Salzburg Festival, the Berliner Festspiele and the Lucerne Festival.
