In 1964, dancer Rudolf Nureyev wrote ballet history with his very own interpretation of "Swan Lake". The Russian dancer, then only 26 years old, choreographed "Swan Lake" and took on the male lead role of the prince himself. His partner was the already 45-year-old Margot Fonteyn. Nureyev stated: "I think the main character is the prince, not the swan, he's just his reflection." After less than two hours the world-famous love story ends, not with the traditional happy ending, but with the death of the prince - and the dance world opened a new chapter.
