MILES: Reinventing Sound and Silence
0000: A compelling portrait of Miles Davis, tracing his constant reinvention through rare archives and testimonies from legendary collaborators.
MILES, directed by Patrick Savey, offers a compelling portrait of one of the most visionary and influential figures in modern music. As 2026 marks the centenary of his birth, the film stands as both a tribute and a timely reappraisal of an artist whose legacy continues to shape contemporary creation. Moving beyond a traditional biography, it explores the constant reinvention that defined Miles Davis’s career, transforming jazz and redefining the boundaries of 20th-century music.
From Birth of the Cool to Bitches Brew and Tutu, Miles Davis continuously expanded the language of music. A pioneering force behind bebop, modal jazz and fusion, he not only redefined his own sound but opened new directions for generations of musicians across genres.
The documentary also highlights his ability to reveal and elevate talent. Through testimonies from close collaborators including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea and Marcus Miller, it sheds light on a creative process driven by intuition, high standards and renewal.
At its core, a rare 1990 interview offers direct insight into his artistic vision, where silence, space and risk are as essential as sound itself.
Enriched by Patrick Savey’s personal perspective, shaped by his experience at Jazz à Vienne, MILES stands as both an intimate portrait and a celebration of a towering artist. This legacy is echoed in Tribute to Miles (Jazz à Vienne Festival, 2011), with Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, and in Marcus Miller – Tutu Revisited (Auditorium de Lyon, 2014).
