Making Infinity
Taking inspiration from an ancient tale this is a cross-cultural collaboration between masters of music and dance from China, Australia and the UK.
Making Infinity is a documentary about the creation of the stage show ONE INFINITY. The ancient Chinese tale of Zhi Yin tells of two strangers from different lands who find in each other a soulmate through the music of the Gu Qin, a traditional Chinese instrument.
Taking inspiration from this tale ONE INFINITY is a unique cross-cultural collaboration between masters of music and dance from China, Australia and the United Kingdom. Audiences are taken on a journey to far away splendour as they witness the power of music and movement to communicate without words.
ONE INFINITY is directed and choreographed by Gideon Obarzanek of whom the New York Times said: “Obarzanek has become a leading figure of Australian Contemporary Dance”. Obarzanek graduated from the Australian Ballet School in 1987 and danced with various companies including The Australian Ballet, Sidney Dance Company and NDT. He has many stage productions to his credit as well as installations, site-specific works, participatory events and film. He is currently the Artistic Director of Rising – the International Arts and Theatre Festival in Melbourne.
The music was co-composed by Max de Wardener from the UK, a bassist turned composer, Genevieve Lacey, an acclaimed Australian recorder virtuoso and Wang Pen, a renowned Gu Qin player from China. The Gu Qin is China's foremost solo instrument, a zither that has existed for over 3000 years. Gu Qin playing was one of the four arts along with calligraphy, painting and an ancient form of chess, Chinese scholars were expected to master.
