Anne-Sophie Mutter and Herbert von Karajan – The Beethoven Finale
It was the culmination of the partnership between Anne-Sophie Mutter and Herbert von Karajan. The result was a magical moment attended by nobody other than the musicians themselves as well as a camera team organised and paid for by Karajan himself. This unique recording of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto – produced as it was behind closed doors – was finally made available after Karajan's death.
The Berlin Wall Concert
The Berlin Philharmonic’s legendary Berlin Wall concert in November 1989, conducted by Daniel Barenboim. Today, the members of the orchestra refer to the event simply as “THE concert”. In place of tickets, the East German citizens only had to show their identity cards. The queues began to form outside the Philharmonie at five in the morning. Interviewed during the interval, the chairman of the orchestra broke down in tears in front of the cameras.
Vladimir Horowitz – Moscow 1986
The farewell concert of a pianist who was already a legend in his lifetime – Vladimir Horowitz. The event in Moscow began on Sunday, 20 April 1986, at four in the afternoon. Many of the fans burst into tears when they witnessed of the return of their idol after 61 years. His manager Peter Gelb tells the true story of the concert, and Martha Argerich declares her love for Horowitz: “His play is deeply erotic. His erotic is absolutely amazing; it’s dangerous! I get incredibly excited with him!”
