Roberto Fonseca was born in Havana in 1975. His father was a drummer and his mother a singer. He started playing drums at the age of 4 before switching to the piano and studying music at the 'Instituto Superior de Arte' from which he graduated in composition. He was noticed on stage at the age of 15 at the Jazz Plaza festival in Havana and recorded his first album in 1999. In 2001, after two solo albums, he was hired as second pianist (replacing Ruben Gonzalez) for a tour of the Buena Vista Social Club, and in 2003, after Ruben's death, he became the regular pianist of the famous collective. He toured the world and recorded with major artists (Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara Portuondo, Miguel 'Anga' Diaz and Cachaito Lopez).

After several records of Cuban jazz with his regular quintet, the pianist approaches new horizons. To his piano style, marked by a very percussive play, wild latin-jazz improvisations and a deep rooting in his family's yoruba religion, are added electro influences, the sounds of the Hammond organ and the contribution of West African artists.
