In 2024, the world will celebrate the 200th birthday of Anton Bruckner, whose works have left an indelible mark on the musical landscape. The legendary Herbert Blomstedt reveres Bruckner as a genius and ranks him alongside Beethoven as one of the greatest symphonists. He has been conducting his works again and again throughout his long conducting career.

Blomstedt, who celebrates his 97th birthday on 11 July, is one of the longest-serving conductors in the world and can look back on an incredibly impressive career. During his illustrious professional life, he has built up a close relationship with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and has conducted them in more than 200 concerts.

In honour of Anton Bruckner and Herbert Blomstedt, the Bamberg Symphony is planning a special gift for its honorary conductor: Bruckner's 9th Symphony in the Basilica of St. Florian, the place to which Anton Bruckner was closely connected throughout his life and which shaped him like no other. This is where he began his musical career as a choirboy in St. Florian and where he later continued as organist of St. Florian. Bruckner was repeatedly drawn back to the monastery, where he ultimately found his final resting place in the crypt beneath the organ.
