From the New World
Andris Nelsons, Kristine Opolais and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig in concert with Dvorák’s Ninth and arias by Dvorák and Smetana
The New York Times has described him as a "young dynamo" and the New Yorker certified his “full-body impact.” Indeed, Andris Nelsons’ heart, esprit and expertise are consolidated by an almost overwhelmingly youthful musical enthusiasm. Leipzig will indeed undergo a makeover with the sympathetic Latvian when Nelsons steps up to the podium of the Gewandhausorchester in February 2018 as its new Music Director.
Together with his wife, the celebrated soprano Kristine Opolais, Nelsons focuses on Dvorák. Next to Wagner, his sound cosmos lies closest to Nelsons’ heart. In this exciting program, the "Othello" overture is followed by extracts from Dvorák’s opera Rusalka: Nelsons’ spouse Opolais takes over the arias of the title role. The concert culminates in Dvorák’s Ninth Symphony, "From the New World".
Andris Nelsons has been no stranger to Leipzig since 2011. He already conquered the audience and orchestra with a total of eight concerts – even before his official inauguration as Gewandhaus Kapellmeister. It will be exciting to see how Nelsons, also heading the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will influence the Leipzig orchestra and the city’s musical life.
