Faust, Il Giardino Armonico, Antonini: Locatelli
A concert recording form Bergamo’s Teatro Sociale portraying Pietro Locatelli, outstanding composer and violin virtuoso of the 18th century.
The “Capricci”, written as cadenzas of his violin concertos op. III, announce and sometimes even overpass the virtuosity of Paganini’s Capricci. On the other side compositions like the Concerto Grosso “Il Pianto di Arianna” use the solo violin and the strings in the most poetical way: through instrumental recitatives and refined concerto movements, describing the story of Arianna that already Monteverdi gave musical setting to in his famous vocal “Lamento di Arianna”. In doing so Locatelli wrote one of the most original compositions of the 18th century. Starting from a “Corellian” style, he opened the doors for future developments in Romantic era of the art of violin playing.
Performed by versatile violinist Isabelle Faust and baroque ensemble Il Giardino Armonico under the baton of Giovanni Antonini, the program consists of three violin concertos and three concerti grossi presenting three different faces of Locatelii’s art of composing: deep knowledge of the counterpoint, extreme virtuosity and poetic style.
