Eric Gauthier: SWAN LAKES
Three new “Swan Lake” performances from the Theaterhaus Stuttgart!
Eric Gauthier asked star choreographers to create their very own version of Tchaikovsky‘s popular ballet “Swan Lake” for the dance company of the Theaterhaus Stuttgart. The result are three 20 minutes long performances as diverse as their choreographers.
"Untitled for 7 Dancers" is Cayetano Soto's contribution: The dancers in black full-body suits are more snake-men than swan-girls as they glide across the floor. A clock on stage counts down the seconds in tenths, hundredths, thousandths: Dance is precision work. Soto succeeds in beautifully overlapping group motifs to a yearning electro sound.
We meet Marco Goecke's swans at the Russian lake Shara Nur, with music by Björk. The birds seem shy, nervous, and hectic in a way that is so specific to this choreographer.
Hofesh Shechter's "Swan Cake" ends the evening on a bright, but by no means light-hearted note. The former music student has composed a soundtrack whose rhythms and choral loops you can't resist. He celebrates life in the movement of the group.
Above all, “Swan Lakes” is a programme that allows both audience and artists to reconnect with something familiar while discovering something completely new.
