Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” in Zürich
Tatjana Gürbaca’s new staging with Irina Lungu, Piotr Beczała and Massimo Cavalletti in the lead roles available as livestream on Arte Concert on 27 June June 2021.
"Love, devastatingly fierce love, without which every opera must remain cold" – that was what Donizetti expected of operatic material – and that was also what Walter Scott's novel "The Bride of Lammermoor" provided him with in its utmost intensity. Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor – Romeo and Juliet in the Scottish Lowlands, so to speak – is by no means a private love tragedy, but rather an eminently political story that demonstrates how a system of power deforms and ultimately corrodes human relationships to the core.
Lucia's famous mad scene is one of the most moving opera scenes ever, playing a major role in this success that continues to this day. The singer of the title role faces an immense challenge,
both musically and in terms of performance. In this new production of the Opernhaus Zürich, Irina Lungu sings the role of Lucia. Piotr Beczała will appear as her lover and Massimo Cavalletti as her brother. Tatjana Gürbaca, renowned for her precise direction, will stage the production. At the podium of the Philharmonia Zurich will be the Italian conductor Speranza Scappucci.
