Culture is back!
Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen announced that the title of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel will be renamed to “Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth”.
On 27 November, the European Parliament approved the new European Commission presented by Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen. In her speech, she announced that the title of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel will be renamed to “Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth”. This is a great success for the cultural sector which had heavily criticised the initial title “Innovation and Youth”.
In her speech, Ursula von der Leyen said that “culture and education are what link our history with our future”. Such a central role requires a budget that can further fulfil this role on European level. To underline this, the EMC is among the 90 supporting organisations from the culture and creative sectors of an Open Letter to EU leaders to support the European Parliament’s proposed budget for Creative Europe.
