Christian Spuck: BOVARY
Accentus Music will be recording Christian Spuck’s first choreography as artistic director of the Staatsballett Berlin on October 20th.
Once again, Christian Spuck places a female outsider at the heart of his new ballet, the premiere of which will open his position as artistic director of the Staatsballett Berlin on October 20th.
His new choreography is based on Gustave Flaubert’s novel “Madame Bovary”, which narrates the tale of a young woman seeking a life beyond the stifling provincial routine alongside her uninspiring, small-minded bourgeois husband. Emma Bovary defies her marital bonds, engages in affairs, becomes immersed in fantasies of love, opulence, and indulgence – but fails. She descends into crippling debt, destroys her family, and ultimately takes her own life.
Christian Spuck’s "Emma Bovary" is not presented as a typical story ballet ; instead, it endeavours to dismantle traditional storytelling frameworks and engage with the material through dance abstraction and a profound exploration of the human spirit, all while maintaining a connection to the storyline.
