Brian Large Presents His Memoir at the Vienna State Opera
Acclaimed television director and IMZ Honorary Member Brian Large presented his memoir 'At Large – Behind the Camera with Brian Large' at the Vienna State Opera last week.
Some 70 friends and colleagues gathered at The Vienna State Opera Tearoom to celebrate the launch of AT LARGE, the memoires of Brian, last week. Hazel Wright had flown in from New Zealand and Judy Flannery from San Francisco. Clips of his key works were shown and Karin Veitl made a very emotional speech, having worked with Brian for most of her career at the ORF. Reiner Moritz remembered the Brian Large we know from his first BBC2 assignment to direct a live broadcast with Stravinsky conducting from the Royal Festival Hall to the Ring of the Century from Bayreuth and the Three Tenors, in all more than 800 recordings including 75 live from the Met and 20 New Year´s concerts from Vienna. Brian Large was honoured in 2017 by the Life Achievement Award of EBU/IMZ and became an Honorary Member of the IMZ later the same year.
His memoires provide accounts of his work on productions and with artists like Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, Leonard Bernstein, Cecilia Bartoli and Birgit Nilsson, to name but a few. Having been at the forefront of live broadcasts of opera, concerts and dance his memoires include personal reflections and behind the scenes insights as well as commentaries on the development of televised performances over the last fifty years.
