BOLERO.S by Mehdi Kerkouche
Mehdi Kerkouche reimagines Ravel’s Bolero through a vibrant contemporary dance piece blending pop culture and generational expression.
With BOLERO.S, choreographer Mehdi Kerkouche revisits Maurice Ravel’s iconic score through a contemporary lens shaped by urban culture and digital practices. Nearly a century after its creation, Bolero remains a fertile ground for reinterpretation, here reimagined through the codes of a generation immersed in image, rhythm and immediacy.
Rather than a purely stage-based approach, Kerkouche expands the piece into a broader performative experience. Movement circulates between stage and public space, echoing how dance today lives both in theatres and on social platforms. The choreography integrates gestures and group dynamics inspired by viral formats and TikTok aesthetics, where repetition, transmission and collective participation become central expressive tools.
Rooted in the progressive structure of Ravel’s score, the piece builds through accumulation and shared energy, but shifts the focus toward interaction, visibility and presence. The dancers form a fluid collective, navigating between individuality and group identity, reflecting contemporary questions around representation and belonging.
Presented at the Maison des Arts de Créteil, BOLERO.S captures the pulse of a connected generation, where choreography extends beyond the stage into everyday environments and digital circulation. By bringing together theatrical writing, urban movement and social media codes, Kerkouche offers a grounded and timely reinterpretation of a canonical work, one that speaks directly to how dance is created, shared and experienced today.
