Berlioz: La Symphonie Fantastique
In time for Berlioz's 150th death anniversary, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique at the Royal Opera of Versailles.
Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique continue their commitment to the music of Berlioz, with a more varied exploration than ever: from to the swashbuckling Corsaire overture, and dazzling evocations of two ancient exotic queens: Dido (in an excerpt from Les Troyens) and Cleopatra in the eponymous cantata. With the Symphonie Fantastique completing the programme.
Held at the Royal Opera of Versailles with a unique decor designed in 1837, which Berlioz himself would have known during his concert in Versailles in 1848. Dating from the reign of Louis-Philippe, it has been restored and installed especially for this performance before being put away again. A world-class roster of acclaimed soloists join the orchestra including French mezzo-soprano Lucile Richardot.
Founded in 1989 by John Eliot Gardiner, the ORR aims to bring the stylistic fidelity and intensity of expression of the renowned English Baroque Soloists to the music of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Orchestra has been internationally recognised for its interpretations of all the major early Romantic composers, starting with Hector Berlioz. They performed and recorded his Symphonie Fantastique in the hall of the old Paris Conservatoire, where the very first performance took place in 1830.
