Behind the Symphony
A new series with conductor Antonio Pappano and the LSO exploring the lives and work of great composers.
Poorhouse is teaming up with Marquee TV in distributing this new series in which conductor Antonio Pappano and the London Symphony Orchestra explore the lives and work of great composers. The first two episodes focus on Gustav Mahler and his 1st Symphony and Ludwig van Beethoven and his 7th. Aaron Copland's 3rd and Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz to follow. What makes these beginnings of an ongoing series so extraordinary to watch is the charisma of the presenting artist, Sir Antonio Pappano. He is so passionate about what he is doing that any audience will want to see more.
You might want to slot the documentaries with the performance of the complete works. Directed for Television by Phil Glenny. Alternatively, you could programme the entire concerts: Mahler 1 with a running time of 57 minutes and Szymanowski's Concert Overture at 16 minutes and Beethoven 7 with a running time of 37 minutes and Bartók's Divertimento for Strings at 22 minutes plus the Concerto for Piano by Thomas Adès, soloist Kirill Gerstein, at 22 minutes.
