Andris Nelsons and the Gewandhausorchester
Accentus Music celebrates the Gewandhausorchester’s 275th anniversary and Andris Nelsons as its new Music Director.
The Gewandhaus season 2017/18 celebrates two momentous occasions: the investiture of
Andris Nelsons to the position of the 21st Gewandhauskapellmeister and the 275th anniversary of the Gewandhausorchester's founding. A four-week festival in February/March 2018 is dedicated to these two occasions.
Andris Nelsons: “Being appointed as the next Gewandhauskapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester is a completely overwhelming honour. This extraordinary orchestra and its wonderful musicians are unique in so many respects, and particularly in their creation of an exceptional sound world based on outstanding tradition that is, at its heart, inspirational.”
Accentus Music, in coproduction with NHK, MDR/Arte and Mezzo, will be filming three of the festive concerts, including Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony, Berg’s Violin Concerto (with Baiba Skride), Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” and Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, the “Pathétique”, as well as new compositions by Steffen Schleiermacher, Jörg Widmann and Thomas Larcher.
To further mark this occasion, Accentus Music will release the recording of Dvořák’s Symphony “From the New World” on DVD and Blu-ray on February 23rd, 2018 – the first ever audiovisual release of the Gewandhausorchester together with its new Music Director! The release also features arias by Dvořák and Smetana, sung by the wonderful Kristine Opolais.
