Afanador by Marcus Morau
Experience Afanador, where Ballet Nacional de España and Marcos Morau transform Ruven Afanador's photography into a surreal dance masterpiece.
Afanador is an extraordinary collaboration between choreographer Marcos Morau and the Ballet Nacional de España, inspired by the evocative imagery of Colombian photographer Ruven Afanador. Blending the elegance of traditional Spanish dance with the boldness of contemporary choreography, the program breathes life into Afanador’s black-and-white photographs, transforming their surreal beauty into captivating movement on stage.
Marcos Morau, celebrated for his innovative work with La Veronal, crafts choreography that mirrors Afanador’s artistic language—contrasts of light and shadow, bold expressions, and poetic surrealism. The dancers of the Ballet Nacional de España deliver a powerful performance, combining technical mastery with emotional depth.
The minimalist set design by Max Glaenzel and monochromatic costumes by Silvia Delagneau complement the visual essence of Afanador's work. The program’s musical score, composed by Juan Cristóbal Saavedra and enriched by the haunting voice of singer-songwriter María Arnal, adds an immersive layer of emotional resonance.
Filmed at the prestigious Teatro Real in February 2024, Afanador redefines the boundaries of Spanish dance traditions, offering a program that is both deeply rooted in cultural heritage and profoundly innovative. This groundbreaking work invites audiences to explore the fusion of photography and dance in an experience that lingers far beyond the stage.
