Accentus Music at the Shostakovich Festival 2025
Two outstanding concerts from the International Shostakovich Festival Leipzig 2025 will be recorded by Accentus Music in May.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich's death, the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig is organizing an extraordinary festival featuring world-class artists.
The opening concert on 15 May 2025 marks the festival’s official start and is a true highlight. It begins with the spirited Festive Overture and continues with the Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring the exceptional Daniil Trifonov as soloist. The programme concludes with the monumental Symphony No. 4. Under the baton of its chief conductor, Andris Nelsons, the Gewandhaus Orchestra will set the tone for what promises to be an unforgettable festival.
The centerpiece of the Shostakovich Festival is the 7th Symphony, famously known as the Leningrad Symphony. This extraordinary masterpiece will be brought to life by two world-class orchestras, the Gewandhausorchester and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, joining forces under the direction of Andris Nelsons. Composed during World War II and premiered in 1942 amidst the siege of Leningrad, the symphony stands as a powerful symbol of resistance against Nazi oppression. Written under the harrowing conditions of the siege, which Shostakovich himself endured, the work is a testament to both artistic brilliance and historical resilience.
