A concert homage to Josquin des Préz
0000: 500 years after his death, ensemble amarcord honors the most important early Renaissance composer in a festive concert at St. Thomas Church Leipzig.
Franco-Flemish vocal polyphony finds its culmination in the work of a man who was courted by princes and music publishers, esteemed by contemporaries such as Martin Luther and respected by fellow composers and singers like no other: Josquin des Préz, darling of the gods. In a way unmatched by others, he succeeded in merging contrapuntal arts and verbal expression, techné and ars, brain and heart. With a program of Josquin's Masses and Motets, ensemble amarcord pays homage in the opening concert of the a cappella festival 2021 to the jubilarian whose work touched people – and at the same time aimed at eternity.
Josquin des Préz, who died in Condé-sur-l'Escaut on August 27, 1521, is one of the most important composers in the repertoire for the multi-award-winning vocal ensemble amarcord. Since their foundation in 1992, the five singers have been intensively studying his extensive oeuvre. The concert in St. Thomas Church Leipzig will feature a representative selection. If possible, the recording will take place with an audience, otherwise under studio conditions. In any case, the floating-meditative character of the music is supported by the stage direction and lighting design. The result is a varied program for the great anniversary of the most important composer of the early Renaissance.
