Due to the coronavirus, the Vienna Philharmonic will invite for the first time in Indian summer, in mid-September, to their nightly gala concert in the festively illuminated Schönbrunn Palace Park. And the invitation this year is for television viewers only. The park must stay closed due to safety measures.
The Russian conductor Valery Gergiev is taking part in the big open-air concert for the fourth time. A special highlight will surely be the debut of German tenor Jonas Kaufmann in this noble castle ambience. The program mainly leads through the world of opera with works by Richard Strauss, Richard Wagner and Giacomo Puccini, as well as Offenbach and Massenet. But, so-called “catchy tunes” by Kálmán, Maurice Jarre and Aram Khatschaturian can also be heard before Strauss’s “Viennese Blood” lets the audience go to waltz bliss.
