Opera in Love from the Arena di Verona
ARTE Concert makes available "Opera in Love" from the Arena di Verona with Plácido Domingo, Sonya Yoncheva and Vittorio Grigolo.
Verona is the setting of the most famous love story in world literature: "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare. In the imposing Arena di Verona, soprano Sonya Yoncheva and tenor Vittorio Grigolo present an evening full of the most beautiful love arias and duets. Plácido Domingo conducts scenes from "Romeo and Juliet" by Charles Gounod as well as from "Tosca" and "La Bohème" by Giacomo Puccini. An outstanding concert evening about love, lust and stormy passion. ARTE Concert shows the final preparations and rehearsals, takes us backstage and presents excerpts from the concert.
The spectators can also look forward to a tour of Verona by Sonya Yoncheva during the rehearsal breaks. She visits the Casa di Giulietta - Juliet's house with its world-famous balcony. It is said that the family of Juliet Capulet lived there, the enemies of Romeo's family, the Montagues. The day before the concert, the singers get medieval costumes from the arena's fund and act out improvised scenes from "Romeo and Juliet" in a historical setting. While rehearsals are still underway, a violent storm hits and floods the city and the ancient opera arena. Will the concert still be able to take place? Uncertainty reigns until an hour before the performance, when the sky suddenly clears up.
"Opera in Love" - available online on ARTE Concert (arte.tv/concert) from 7 February until 14 May and broadcasted on ARTE on Valentine’s Day at 17:40 CET.
