Ofunam's concert: A staple of culture
The concerts performed by OFUNAM go a long way back with its university and its country as a staple of art and music in Mexico.
OFUNAM offers three seasons per year on Sala Netzahualcoyotl, as well as touring in different UNAM schools and colleges. It offered its first official concert at Parque Obrero Venustiano Carranza in Mexico City in March 1936, but it was until 1975 when the orchestra settled at its current seat in Sala Netzahualcoyotl that it established itself as a staple of culture in UNAM.
Previously, the orchestra has toured throughout the university in the auditoriums of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters which drew it closer to the student body as part of university life; this has remained to this day in OFUNAM’s external concerts at the main campus and the further reach achieved by the performances’ broadcast in TV UNAM, particularly at the arrival of the pandemic.
OFUNAM and the music department of the university, Música UNAM, mean to promote music and its expression to the university body and Mexican society through the showcase of symphony orchestra, chamber music and such in multimedia and other genres. Thus, OFUNAM’s concerts reflect the university’s values of expanding culture in Mexico through being open, accessible and rich in diversity.
