New VBW production of "Thaïs" on TV
18 APRIL 2021: "Thais" presented by Vereinigte Bühnen Wien with Theater an der Wien will be broadcasted on ORF III on 18 April 2021.
„Thaïs“ is one of Jules Massenet’s masterpieces but quite seldom shown on stage. Theater an der Wien planned to open it‘s new production in January but due to the Corona-restrictions, it couldn’t be shown live with spectators.
But in order to open this opera to a wide public it will be broadcasted on TV: „Thaïs“ will be shown as part of the series of broadcasts „ Wir spielen für Osterreich – Erlebnis Bühne“ on 18 April on ORF III.
The opera's new production is directed by Peter Konwitschny who tells the story of the beautiful but unhappy courtesan who finds her way to fulfilment in faith. The American soprano Nicole Chevalier takes over the very demanding title-role, her partner on stage is the Austrian tenor Josef Wagner, Leo Hussain and the ORF Radio Symphonie-Orchester perform this emotional oeuvre.
Vereinigte Bühnen Wien in cooperation with ORF and UNITEL already broadcasted Rameau’s „Platée“ on 27 March, and Prokofjew’s „The fiery angel“ was recorded some weeks ago.
Prof. Dr. Franz Patay, CEO Vereinigte Bühnen Wien
„We are very disappointed that we couldn’t show the sold-out evenings of 'Thais', 'Platée' and 'The fiery angel' to our audience. Therefore we are even happier that our strategic cooperation with ORF and UNITEL makes it possible to present outstanding productions of Roland Geyer’s intendancy to our spectators.“
