Met Opera: Live in HD – Fidelio
15 MARCH 2025: Extraordinary soprano Lise Davidsen stars in Beethoven’s only opera – transmitted live to cinemas on 15 March.
The incomparable Lise Davidsen takes on the demanding role of Leonore, the faithful wife who risks everything to save her husband from the clutches of tyranny in Beethoven's revolutionary masterpiece Fidelio. Hailed as one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos of her generation, the Norwegian-born Davidsen brings her enormous vocal power, soaring lyricism, and dramatic intensity to this iconic character.
Completing the distinguished cast is British tenor David Butt Philip as the political prisoner Florestan, Polish bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny as the villainous Don Pizarro, and veteran German bass René Pape as the jailer Rocco. Jürgen Flimm’s striking production finds modern-day parallels in Beethoven’s deeply moving tale of love, courage, and liberation focussing on the stirring celebration of freedom and the power of the individual to overcome tyranny.
The live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, presented in Germany and Austria by Clasart Classic.
