MET OPERA LIVE IN HD – DER ROSENKAVALIER
15 April 2023, 18:00 (CET): Acclaimed soprano Lise Davidsen stars in the Met Opera's revival of Strauss’s most popular opera – transmitted live to cinemas on 15 April.
A dream cast assembles for Strauss’s grand Viennese comedy: Internationally renowned Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen – who thrilled audiences worldwide last season in her acclaimed performance of Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos – stars as the Marschallin, opposite mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey as her lover, Octavian, and soprano Erin Morley as Sophie, the beautiful younger woman who steals his heart. Bass Günther Groissböck offers a larger-than-life portrayal of Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau, the outlandish nobleman lusting after every woman in sight, and Brian Mulligan is Sophie’s wealthy father, Faninal. Maestro Simone Young leads a buoyant account of Strauss’s beloved score, which incorporates Viennese waltzes, raucous comedy, and the composer’s characteristically vivid palette of orchestral color. Robert Carsen’s entertaining and insightful production updates the action from the mid-18th century to 1911, the year of the opera’s premiere, and was inspired by architects and designers of the Vienna Secession. The live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, presented in Germany and Austria by Clasart Classic.
