Ibero-America through the eyes of foreign cinema
Follow this engaging discussion on the representation of Ibero-American realities in foreign cinema presented by TV UNAM and Canal 22.
Hosted by notable film critics Fernanda Solórzano, who has written extensively on cinema, and Leonardo García Tsao, who is also a screenwriter and former director of Mexico's National Cinematheque, Encuadre Iberoamericano (Ibero-American Framing) is a television series produced by TV UNAM and Canal 22 that explores Ibero-American films from a wide range of perspectives such as the representation of diverse social issues like mental health, gender-based violence, sexual diversity, migration, and religion.
In this episode, Iberoamérica Vista por Cineastas Extranjeros (Ibero-America Through the Eyes of Foreign Filmmakers), Fernanda and Leonardo discuss how Ibero-American realities have been depicted in cinema by foreign directors. Their discussion goes from the films that sketch only a superficial representation of the countries' tourist attractions and those that use folklore to highlight the otherness, to the films that portray a more complete perspective of the social and political conditions as the background for thrilling stories.
The episode also includes a clip of Costa Rican director Ariel Escalante Meza talking about his latest movie Domingo y la Niebla (Domingo and the Mist) (2022) and other two clips about the participation of Ibero-America in the 2022 International Short Film Festival Oberhausen and the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, as well as a brief review of the work of award-winning Mexican director Ernesto Contreras.
