DVD + Blu-Ray:
Gounod: La Nonne sanglante / Opéra Comique
Charles Gounod’s Gothic melodrama La Nonne sanglante staged by David Bobée featuring stellar conductor of Insula orchestra and accentus, Laurence Equilbey.
(‘The Bleeding Nun’)
Opera in five acts (1854)
Libretto by Eugène Scribe and Germain Delavigne
The plot of Gounod’s second opera La Nonne sanglante is drawn from Matthew Lewis’s once famous 1796 novel The Monk featuring warring families, two lovers, and the vengeful spectre of the Nun, to which Gounod responds with music that fuses Romanticism with the supernatural on the grandest scale. Stage director David Bobée and conductor Laurence Equilbey’s cinematic interpretation is inspired by horror films and Gothic Romanticism offering a contemporary reading of this neglected masterpiece. Mezzo-soprano Marion Lebèque stars as the Nun, along with the American tenor Michael Spyres as Rodolphe.
