Opéra bouffe in three acts (1877)
Libretto by Eugène Leterrier and Albert Vanloo

The high-spirited libretto and brilliant music of L’Étoile helped to establish Chabrier’s name as a composer in 1870s Paris. With a heady mix of the surreal, a comic plot with lots of theatrical potential, L’Étoile is one of the most entertaining works in the genre, and is now recognised as a unique example of French 19th-century light opera, set apart from other examples by its sophisticated orchestration and gossamer-light wit.

Laurent Pelly directs this visually stunning production from Dutch National Opera in 2014, featuring costumes by Laurent Pelly and Jean-Jacques Delmotte. Stéphanie d’Oustrac and Christophe Mortagne head a distinguished cast, along with the Residentie Orkest The Hague conducted by French opera specialist, Patrick Fournillier.
