The work's beautiful aria – providing an oasis of calm at both the start and conclusion of the work – forms the basis for 30 variations that showcase Bach's dazzling compositional imagination. From the performer, they demand nothing less than technical perfection, combined with the musical intelligence and instincts to bring the music dancing off the page.
