Giacomo Puccini’s "Tosca", one of the great verismo operas from the Italian repertoire, will form the centrepiece of 2018 Salzburg Easter Festival, staged by Michael Sturminger. Anja Harteros will sing the title role, Cavaradossi will be performed by Aleksandrs Antoņenko, one of the world’s leading young spinto tenors, while internationally renowned baritone Ludovic Tézier is Scarpia. Sets and costumes for "Tosca" will be designed by donmartin supersets (Renate Martin and Andreas Donhauser).

Premiered in 1900, Giacomo Puccini’s “melodrama” "Tosca" is a work on the threshold: it questions opera traditions, highlighting moments of fracture in the operatic genre. The piece’s dramaturgy oscillates between an artist’s opera and a love story, between a political thriller and a psychological drama. Structurally, "Tosca" diverges from convention: it breaks open the usually closed bravura arias, tends to fragment musical sequences and is interspersed with chromatic and impressionist moments as well as whole tone passages.

The Salzburg Easter Festival was founded more than 50 years ago by Herbert von Karajan and has since become one of the world’s leading festivals.
