Christian Thielemann succeeds Daniel Barenboim as General Music Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. In his inaugural concert with the Staatskapelle Berlin, Thielemann first conducts Elysium by the contemporary Canadian composer Samy Moussa. This is followed by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Piano Concerto No. 2 in D minor (op. 40), a work that embodies the romantic passion and virtuosity of the 19th century. The finale is Arnold Schoenberg's Pelléas et Mélisande (op. 5), a symphonic poem full of emotional intensity that explores the late Romantic tradition and the limits of tonality.
