Joana Mallwitz and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin open their season with a programme shot through with the rhythms and emotions of dance. First come two very different reflections on Vienna and its waltzes: the waltz sequences from Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier look back to an imagined 18th-century golden age, while Ravel’s La Valse, written in the aftermath of the First World War, turns the waltz into something dazzling, dangerous and unstable. After the interval comes Unsuk Chin’s Subito con forza, an arresting Beethoven tribute from 2020, before Mallwitz returns us to the 20th century and one of its great ballets, conducting selections from Prokofiev’s brilliantly imaginative and powerfully moving Romeo and Juliet.
