Reopening of the Theater an der Wien
Theater an der Wien reopening on 12 October 2024 at 11:00 (live broadcast in ORFIII), featuring Beethoven and Strauss, followed by Idomeneo at 19:00.
The reopening of the Theater an der Wien will take place on Saturday, 12 October 2024, at 11:00. After two and a half years of renovations, the theatre will celebrate with government, arts representatives, and all involved in the project. The first performance will feature music by two composers tied to the venue: Ludwig van Beethoven, who lived here while composing Fidelio, premiered his Fantasy for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra in C minor, Op. 80 along with his 5th and 6th symphonies. Also performed will be the overture to Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, reflecting the theatre’s operetta history. The Choral Fantasy will feature soloist Mao Fujita, the Arnold Schoenberg Choir, and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Petr Popelka. ORF III will broadcast the ceremony live at 11:00 and it will also be available later on ORF TVthek.
Later, at 19:00, there will be a concert performance of Mozart’s Idomeneo. After the Trojan War, King Idomeneo vows to sacrifice a life to the gods, only to face the choice of sacrificing his son, Idamante. In this story of a king torn between duty and love, Mozart crafted a timeless plea for an enlightened society. Idomeneo breaks from classical tragedy, showcasing arias and choruses revealing deep emotions. The performance will be in Italian with German surtitles.
Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at +43 (0)1 58885-111, or at the box offices at Theater an der Wien and the Wien Ticket Pavilion next to the Vienna State Opera.
