Stuttgart’s world renowned directing-duo, Jossi Wieler, Intendant of the Oper Stuttgart and the opera’s chief dramaturg Sergio Morabito, stage a new production of Tchaikovsky’s operatic masterwork Pique Dame.

While his Eugene Onegin is the most popular of Tchaikovsky’s operas, the composer considered his later opera Pique Dame to be one of the best works of his life. Composed in only 44 days to a libretto by his brother Modest, based on a novel by Alexander Pushkin, he was extremely satisfied with his effort and the incredible success of the opera from its premiere onward proved him right.
The story centres on the young Russian soldier Hermann, who feels haunted by the ghost of a duchess who was once, in her youth at the French Court, known and celebrated as the „Muscovite Venus“. According to rumours, it was at the same Court, that the Duchess was bestowed with the secret of three infallible playing cards. In Hermann’s soul, the envisioned victory in gambling more and more replaces the erotic fulfilment of his love for Lisa, until he is finally lead straight into a deadly embrace with the old Duchess.

The production featuring Erin Caves as Hermann, Vladislav Sulimsky as Tomsky, Helene Schneiderman as the Countess and Rebecca von Lipinski as Lisa is conducted by Stuttgart’s musical director Sylvain Cambreling.
