Music before Columbus: Sanctuary of Butterflies
Looking for coproduction: A series in the making focuses on indigenous cultures in Mexico seen through the lens of music and dance.
"Sanctuary of Butterflies" is a docuseries about indigenous music and culture in Mexico. This visually striking, character driven story follows musician and folk hero Luis Perez-Ixoneztli on a personal journey to explore the fascinating living traditions of Mexico’s Indigenous Peoples.
Across five episodes, Luis brings us face to face with shamans, elders, and communities who practice the rituals, songs, and languages of their ancestors. The characters he meets are sometimes the last living links to their traditions, while others persist in preserving their heritage in today’s rapidly changing world.
Luis’ fascinating life and career, defined by the study of pre-Colombian culture and creating groundbreaking music, informs and compliments this journey. What emerges from this original series is an engrossing look at a rarely seen side of Mexico, and a haunting portrayal of modern-day indigenous identity.
This series is being produced by Caminante Films from New York City, and Mexico City based Red Elephant Films. Roughly half of the footage for this five-episode docuseries has already been filmed, and a rough-cut of episode 1 is available to view, along with selected scenes and excerpts.
We are seeking financial support and co-production partnerships to complete what remains of production and the editing/post-production process. IMZ Members: feel free to contact us for more information.
