100 years of the Salzburg Festival!
The Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss has always been the exemplary opera of the festival. The year of 1960 saw the performance of a lifetime immortalized on 35mm film: Herbert von Karajan, the most esteemed conductor of the festival, and star soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf surpassed themselves in an astounding appearance at the opening of the new Great Festival Theatre.
Milestone events in music are those rare occasions when suddenly everything gels: great artistry, unique circumstances, and the magic that outlives the moment. This series is dedicated to stellar musical events that gripped the whole world and thanks to film and television have remained unforgettable until today.
