Live from the Mahler Festival Leipzig
Between 19 and 23 May, Accentus Music in co-production with MDR, BR, and Arte, will be filming four concerts at the Leipzig Gewandhaus.
2023 sees the long-awaited return of the Mahler Festival at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, which had to be postponed due to the pandemic. It focuses on the life and work of Gustav Mahler, who spent two years of his life in Leipzig. In May 2023, all symphonies and more works are performed by leading Mahler conductors and orchestras over the span of 18 days. Accentus Music, in co-production with MDR, BR, and Arte, will record and livestream for of the concerts between 19 and 23 May 2023:
The Gewandhausorchester and their Kapellmeister Andris Nelsons will perform his monumental Second Symphony in the Gewandhaus – together with two Ying Fang, Gerhild Romberger, and the MDR-Rundfunkchor.
Tugan Sokhiev and the Munich Philharmonic, together with Christiane Karg, Ekaterina Gubanova, and Andreas Schager, will present the ‘Lied von der Erde’ and Mahler's Fourth, two works that show us bright blue skies as well as cracks in the firmament - just like Mahler’s life.
‘It is my best work, with a primarily cheerful character’. This was Gustav Mahler’s assessment of his Symphony No. 7. In Leipzig, Daniel Harding and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra will perform this extraordinary work that oscillates between carefree lightness and grueling darkness like no other in Mahler’s symphonic canon.
In 2023, the Budapest Festival Orchestra and their founder Iván Fisher celebrate 40 years together on stage. In Leipzig, they perform Mahler’s Ninth that has been a staple in their joint repertoire, their interpretation being praised in particular for its straightforward clarity.
