Limitless Fantasy: Salome & Die Frau ohne Schatten
Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra explore Richard Strauss’s seductive and transcendent worlds in Salome and Die Frau ohne Schatten.
Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra explore the boundless theatrical imagination of Richard Strauss through excerpts from two treasured operas. These sumptuous scores capture different extremes of the brilliant composer: the flagrantly seductive in 'Salome' and the transcendently philosophical in 'Die Frau ohne Schatten'.
Surrounded by his favorite paintings at Vienna’s Leopold Museum, Welser-Möst considers the private encounter between artwork and viewer — just as a painting reveals different forms to different eyes, “a performance is very much determined by the audience.” He recalls the thrill of his own first experience seeing 'Salome', and marvels at Strauss’s ability to elevate humanity through music.
