JAKUB HRUSA CONTINUES THE MARTINU-CYCLE
Following in the footsteps of his mentor JiRí BElohlávek, Jakub Hrusa and the Czech Philharmonic continue the Martinu-Cycle with Symphonies No. 3 & 6.
Jirí Belohlávek and his Czech Philharmonic embarked on the ambitious project of recording the complete Martinů symphonies at the visually and acoustically spectacular Rudolfinum Prague, starting with Symphonies Nos. 1 and 4.
After the death of Belohlávek, his pupil Jakub Hrůša took over the project. Together with the Czech Philharmonic, he will continue the cycle with performances of Martinů’s Symphonies No. 3 and 6 in March 2018. Hrůša, Chief Conductor of the Bamberg Symphony, has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra. Praised for his “passionate, thrilling” way of conducting his ‘all-Czech’ BBC proms concert by the New York Times, Hrusa is uniquely qualified to face the task of performing the works of Martinů, who is deemed the greatest Czech composer of his generation.
Martinů’s eclectic, unconventional style comes from putting musical influences from his homeland of Moravia in juxtaposition to jazz elements, which he picked up when living in the USA from 1941 to 1953, where Martinů created all of his six symphonies.
