Inside the Rose International Dance Prize
A fascinating insight in the inaugural season of a prestigious new Dance award which the Guardian called "dance's answer to the Turner Prize".
Poorhouse International is pleased to present the first ever substantial dance award carrying a cash prize of forty thousand pounds which was held at Sadler's Wells this year. The jury looked at a short list of the following four titles: An Untitled Love choreographed by Kyle Abraham in collaboration with A.I.M; Carcaça choreographed by Marco Da Silva Ferreira; Larsen C by Christos Papadopoulos and Encantado by Lia Rodrigues.
The prize went to Christos Papadopoulos from Greece for his dance piece Larsen C. He was inspired by the shelf ice of the same name in Antarctica. Due to climate chance a large part of it broke off in 2017 and turned into a huge iceberg. The winner commented: “I tried to create another perception of what is life”.
The event was recorded by MarqueeTV and uses clips of the shortlisted dance pieces, an introduction by Sir Alistair Spalding, Artistic Director of Sadler´s Wells, interviews with the four choreographers and comments from by the jurors, singer-songwriter P. J. Harvey, choreographer and theatre director Dame Arlene Phillips and French-Indian poet Karthika Naïr. The documentary is narrated by Fiona Shaw.
