Classical:Next Film Showcases
The IMZ has partnered with Classical:NEXT to create the Film Showcases, which give filmmakers the opportunity to present their work and foster new connections between the classical music and film industries.
This new format is an opportunity for filmmakers to present their work, connect with the community of classical and art music professionals, find new partnership opportunities beyond the film industry, and foster a dialogue between the sectors.
The Film Showcases are divided into two thematic blocks, each featuring three films, and will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers, moderated by IMZ Secretary General Max Beckham-Ortner.
BLOCK 1: REDISCOVERING CLASSICS THROUGH FILM
Tuesday, 13th May | 12:00 - 13:15
This film showcase explores iconic classical works reimagined through the lens of film, blending music with powerful visual storytelling. From a Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances inspired transformation tale to a fresh interpretation of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, and a reexamination of Ophelia’s tragic story, these films offer unique perspectives on timeless themes and characters, reinterpreting them for the modern world.
+ DNA Project – Beethoven Symphony No. 7 (Sweden)
+ Die Wandlung (Germany)
+ Ophelia, the Hysterical (Brazil)
BLOCK 2: REINVENTING SOUND AND STAGE
Wednesday, 14th May | 12:00 - 13:30
In this session, we delve into the fusion of classical music with new technologies, sounds, and ideas. The films explore innovative approaches to music performance, including a bassist’s journey to create a concerto for bass guitar, an experimental deconstruction of the piano, and a documentary highlighting the evolving role of orchestras in the 21st century, challenging traditional boundaries and reshaping the classical music experience.
+ PNO (Prepared New Objects) (South Korea)
+ Mission Bass (Belgium)
+ KLASSIK Underground: Shifting Sounds (Germany)
