Chailly completes his Rachmaninoff Cycle

Riccardo Chailly and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra bring their landmark Rachmaninoff cycle to its conclusion in a program spanning Scriabin, Rachmaninoff and Respighi. Lukas Sternath performs the composer’s rarely heard Piano Concerto No. 4 in its revised 1941 version, followed by orchestral excerpts from Aleko and Respighi’s brilliant orchestrations of the Cinq Études-Tableaux. Sternath’s performance was praised by the NZZ: “The music glows, it shines and sings,” with the pianist revealing himself as “a true poet at the keyboard.” Chailly “keeps things firmly in hand” while allowing “plenty of room for sensitive nuance” (Luzerner Zeitung). The Rachmaninoff/Respighi rarities emerged “seductively and with high drama, almost theatrically.” This recording marks the completion of Riccardo Chailly's landmark Rachmaninoff cycle, featuring all four piano concertos, the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and all of the composer's major symphonic works.
